How To Hear God's Voice

Then the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ and Samuel answered ‘Speak, for your servant hears.’ 1 Samuel 3:10

Samuel is a 12 year old boy, and his mother Hannah, promised the Lord that if He gave her a son, that she would give him back to the Lord. So the day came that she took Samuel to the temple and handed him over to Eli. Samuel did not yet know the voice of the Lord. God called him three times, and he ran into Eli, finally Eli realized that God was calling Samuel, the 4th time Samuel knew it was the Lord. From that day forward, Samuel knew God’s voice.

Not one word that Samuel spoke ever fell to the ground, all came to pass         1 Samuel 3:19

We must believe that God cares about all the details of our lives. Matthew 10:30

All the hair on your head is numbered Psalm 139 The Psalm is full of God’s love for us.

5 Steps to hearing the voice of God.

Habakkuk 2:1-2

1. Withdraw pull back, get alone with the Lord. Hearing from God starts with a desire. You have to want to hear from God. God is more willing to talk than we are to listen. Habakkuk said ‘I will’ climb up to my watch tower. It’s a choice we make. There is so much noise these day’s and so many voices find a quiet place. Jesus said in Matthew 6:6 Go into your room and close the door. Shut the world out and be in His presence. Jesus would withdraw to a quiet place to pray. Position yourself to hear from God.

2. Wait calm your thought and emotions. To hurry is the death of Prayer. Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God.... Psalm 62:5 My soul waits silently for God... Relax, be quiet and listen. Until you get comfortable with silence you won’t hear God’s voice.

3. Read God’s word. Hab 2:1 ‘I will look to see what He will say to me’  God’s will is in His word, and from His word He will speak to you. Habakkuk used visionary language to describe how he listened to God. For those who are seers and visionaries, listening to God also means watching. God is spirit, and has many ways to communicate. Take into account your gift and the unique way you connect with God. Be open to receiving impressions from the Holy Spirit and dig deeply into God’s Word.

4. Write Down the insights, write down your prayers and read them back. David did in the book of Psalms. You may get a vision, pictures, images etc Hab2:2 When Colleen and I would come to a cross roads, we would draw aside, to a quiet place and just pray and wait. I would feel a strong leading to write down what I was hearing the Holy Spirit say. It bought such peace and direction for our lives. This has happened often over the past 43 years.

5. Renew Regularly Go back over all that you have received and put it to the test. Satan can come as a angel of light!!

This is not all I have to say and teach on this important subject. There is much more to come.

Put into practice these 5 steps, and God’s voice will become clear to you.
