The Anointing of the Holy Spirit
The Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. 1 Samuel 16:13
In the Old Testament and New Testament alike, the anointing spoke of a special action and empowerment by the Holy Spirit. The future King David was anointed with oil (symbolic of the Holy Spirit) by God’s prophet. That was the outward expression. However, what happened inwardly was far more important. The power of the Holy Spirit came upon him to equip him for the future God had for him.
Inward transformation means, ‘change or renewal from a life that no longer conforms to the ways of the world to one that pleased God’ Romans 12:2 This is accomplished by the renewing of our minds, an inward spiritual transformation that will manifest itself in outward actions of power.
David was 25yrs old when first anointed, and became King at age 30 2 Samuel 5:4. He reigned for 40yrs 1 King 2:11 and died. Wow the Bible says he was advanced in years and full of days!! He was only 70 years old!! Phew I am 70 and want to be still preaching in my 90’s.
Look at King Saul 1 Samuel 10:6 ‘Then the spirit of the Lord (Holy Spirit) will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man” Verse 9 ‘God gave him another heart’ Yes a new heart. God took our heart of stone and gave us a heart of flesh Ezekiel 36:26 also see Ezekiel 11:19
With our new Born Again heart, and full of the Holy Ghost and Power Acts 1:8 God has equipped all of us to walk in His ways, and extend His kingdom on earth. It’s on the inside where we start to die spiritually in our hearts. Stop fellowship, reading the word, praying in the spirit, draw back etc and it’s not long before God is not the centre of it all.
In Acts 10:38 Peter is preaching to Cornelius’s household and he says ‘How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. For God was with Him. The Holy Spirit anointing brings power to go around ‘Doing Good’. The anointing is not just for healing, preaching, witnessing, deliverance and miracle-working power. It is also to empower us to be doers of good, to needy people.
Jesus went about doing good!! Jesus did good by teaching, healing, feeding, and comforting people. Matthew 5:44 Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you.... Hebrew 13:16 But do not forget to do good and to share for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Like Jesus, we should ask ourselves each day ‘What good thing can I do today in Jesus name?’
We can make a difference in many lives every day because we are empowered to do so by the anointing. I have much more to say on this subject and will do so in the weeks to come.
Start today us you God given gift.
God’s Blessing on all you do!
