But lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where neither moth nor rust
destroys and thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20
Jesus is teaching His disciples about eternal things and how to live life
on the earth. Like Abraham who was a sojourner in a foreign land, just
passing through looking for the city to come Hebrew 11:8-10 We also have
this attitude that this place is not all that God has for us. In
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has put eternity in their hearts. In every human soul
is a God-given awareness that there is ‘something more’ than this transient
world, and with that awareness of eternity comes a hope that we can one day
find a fulfillment not afforded by the ‘vanity’ in this world. Paul says in
1 Corinthians 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of
all men the most pitiable.
Jesus said in John 14:1-6 ‘In my father's house are many mansions I go to
prepare a place for you.' So He is saying in Matthew 6:19-21 Don’t just
live to accumulate and hoard treasures in this life only but lay up for
yourselves treasures in Heaven. Both you and I can be rich in this life and
the one to come. Some people are very rich in this world but bankrupt in
Heaven.
Jesus told a parable in Luke 12:13-21 ‘Please Read’ A rich man had a farm
and it yielded a plentiful crop. He said ‘I will build a greater barn and
store all my crops for years to come. He said soul, you have many goods
laid up for many years, take your ease, eat, drink and be merry. But God
said to him ’You Fool! This night your soul will be required of you, then
whose will those things be? Then Jesus said ’So is he, who lays up treasure
for himself and is not rich towards God. Matthew 6:21 For where your
treasure is there your heart will be also.
I don’t know about you, but Jesus’ sermon makes me stop and take account of
what I treasure.
Have an awesome week ahead
